These days, I'm an adult who can't give up gasoline smells or board sports, but as a child, I had very sensitive skin and struggled with even slight fuzz on yarn or fabric finishes that didn't suit my skin. That's why what I look for in an everyday fashion item like a T-shirt isn't just graphics, but quality that lets me enjoy comfort and a luxurious feel every day, even with irritated skin or a tired body.
In the past, we have used a wide range of techniques, including extra-long-staple cotton, Supima cotton, and US cotton, as well as high-twist yarn made by Z-twisting air-spun yarn for added strength. T-shirts made on old Japanese loopwheel knitting machines, where gravity naturally lets the fabric fall to create the fullest possible texture, were also of excellent quality, but they offered a different answer to the desire for a luxurious feel.
_ So, rather than the single-knit jersey construction used until now, where the weft passes through the warp on one side only, we focused on smooth jersey, a proven fabric that creates a stretchy, clean surface with the same knit on both sides, and began updating it.
Smooth-knit stitches overlap, with the top and bottom halves forming a dense surface. This makes the fabric thicker than jersey, but because the same stitch isn't knitted across the width, the finished surface has less texture and feels even smoother against the skin.
After testing various yarn blends to make the most of these characteristics, we chose a smooth-knit fabric with a fine texture, made from two-ply yarn spun from long-staple 40-count cotton, which feels soft and has no fuzz. We then used a special softening treatment and wash finish to remove fuzz, adding a light, distinctive cashmere-like feel and a silk-like drape. The result is an ideal, luxurious feel that won't cause discomfort. Since it's been washed once, it also resists shrinkage.
In summer, it feels light and comfortable. In winter, its knit construction helps retain body heat when worn under outerwear, giving this T-shirt added warmth. It's the perfect everyday companion in every season.
